What Makes an Apostolic Work "Heroic"?

+

In the Legion of Mary Handbook, heroism is not defined by extraordinary or dramatic deeds, but by the love, fidelity, and perseverance with which ordinary apostolic work is carried out. A work becomes heroic when it is performed with unwavering commitment and a generous spirit, even in the face of difficulty.

Heroic apostolic service is characterised by:

  • Faithfully serving over many years.
  • Reaching out to those who may be difficult, ungrateful, or resistant.
  • Persevering despite setbacks, discouragement, or little visible success.
  • Willingly sacrificing time, comfort, convenience, or personal recognition for the good of others.
  • Treating every person with patience, dignity, compassion, and genuine Christian love.

For example, faithfully visiting an elderly person each week for many years—even when there is little acknowledgment or appreciation—reflects the kind of heroic service the Handbook encourages. Such quiet, consistent acts of charity often require greater perseverance than a single extraordinary deed.

The Handbook reminds us that God does not primarily ask for spectacular achievements, but for steadfast fidelity. True heroism is found in a lifetime of humble, loving apostolic service offered generously and faithfully, one person at a time.

Our History

The Heritage

The Battle Begins: Founded in 1921

The Legion of Mary was founded in Dublin, Ireland, on September 7, 1921, by Frank Duff, a lay civil servant in the Department of Finance. Duff envisioned an organized lay apostolate where regular Catholics would engage in active spiritual works, working in cooperation with their parish priests to carry the Light of Christ into their communities.

Deliberately modeled after the structural discipline, loyalty, and esprit de corps of the ancient Roman Legion, the organization is structured as spiritual units. The base parish unit is called a praesidium (from the Latin for a military garrison or outpost), reporting upward through local Curiae, Comitia, and Senatus, all unified under the central global governing body—the Concilium Legionis Mariae—in Dublin, Ireland.

Throughout its history, the Legion has produced incredible envoys of faith, including Servant of God Frank Duff, Venerable Edel Quinn (who established hundreds of outposts in East Africa), and Servant of God Alfie Lambe (who brought the Legion across South America). Today, the Legion operates in approximately 170 countries, representing one of the largest lay apostolic movements in the Catholic Church.

Spiritual Weapons

Prayers of the Tessera

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Come, O Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of Your love. v. Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created. r. And You shall renew the face of the earth. Let us pray. O God, Who by the light of the Holy Spirit did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise, and ever rejoice in His consolation, through Christ Our Lord. Amen. v. Thou, O Lord, wilt open my lips. r. And my tongue shall announce Thy praise. v. Incline unto my aid, O God. r. O Lord, make haste to help me. v. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. r. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. (Five Decades of the Holy Rosary follow)
Antiphon: Who is she that cometh forth as the morning rising, fair as the moon, bright as the sun, terrible as an army set in battle array? v. My soul doth magnify the Lord. r. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. v. Because He hath regarded the humility of His handmaid: for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. r. Because He that is mighty hath done great things to me: and holy is His name. v. And His mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear Him. r. He hath shewed might in His arm: He hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. v. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble. r. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich He hath sent empty away. v. He hath received Israel His servant, being mindful of His mercy. r. As He spoke to our fathers: to Abraham and to his seed for ever. v. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. r. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: Who is she that cometh forth as the morning rising, fair as the moon, bright as the sun, terrible as an army set in battle array? v. O Mary, conceived without sin. r. Pray for us who have recourse to thee. Let us pray. O Lord Jesus Christ, our Mediator with the Father, Who hast been pleased to appoint the Most Blessed Virgin, Thy Mother, to be our Mother also, and our Mediatrix with Thee, mercifully grant that whosoever cometh to Thee seeking Your favours may rejoice to receive all of them through her. Amen.
We fly to thy patronage, O Holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. v. Mary Immaculate, Mediatrix of all Graces (or title of Praesidium). r. Pray for us. v. Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. r. Pray for us. v. All ye Heavenly Powers, Mary's Legion of Angels. r. Pray for us. v. Saint John the Baptist. r. Pray for us. v. Saints Peter and Paul. r. Pray for us. Let us pray. Confer, O Lord, on us, who serve under the deathless banner of Mary, that fullness of faith in Thee and trust in her, to which it is given to conquer the world. Grant us a lively faith, animated by charity, which will enable us to perform all our actions from the pure motive of love for Thee, and likewise always to see Thee and serve Thee in our neighbour; a faith, firm and immovable as a rock, through which we shall rest tranquil and steadfast amid the crosses, toils and disappointments of life; a courageous faith, which will inspire us to undertake and carry through without hesitation great things for God and for the salvation of souls; a faith which shall be our Legion's Column of Fire—to lead us in one united body forward—to enkindle everywhere the fires of divine love—to enlighten those who are in darkness and in the shadow of death—to inflame those who are lukewarm—to bring back life to those who are dead in sin; and which shall guide our own feet in the way of peace; so that the battle of this life being ended, our Legion may reassemble without the loss of any one, in the Kingdom of Thy love and glory. Amen. May the souls of our departed legionaries and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.
